Dance | 1 Comment

I have had the opportunity to photograph many dance concerts over the last few years. This is all because of my wife. She is a dancer. Currently she is the dance teacher at Canyon View High School, this is her second year there. In addition to taking photographs, I have done a little bit of graphic designing. Mainly dance concert posters and programs. Again because of my wife. I enjoy doing it. It is fun to do something totally different, yet not completely unrelated to photography.
I just completed this year’s spring dance concert poster. Yes, the dancer in the poster is one of my photographs. Normally, I don’t like to take my photos and completely destroy them like this, but sometimes it is necessary. In this case, the high school has no budget to print a good quality, full color poster. What ends up happening is a master copy is made, and then someone takes it to the high school’s copy machine and reproduces hundreds of copies. An actual photograph looks like crap when run through a copier, so simplifying it like this gives it a fighting chance. Also, dance photos tend to use a lot of black ink, so they appreciate it when I design something that is a little less ink heavy.
The main goal here is to create something that will grab the attention of someone passing by and immediately say “Dance” in their mind and give them the pertinent info.
Here is the original photograph.

This is a follow up to the senior portraits I posted yesterday. The senior, McKay, gave me an idea of what he wanted to do for his graduation card. He showed me a design he liked and I adapted it for him and threw in my own tweaks and style to it. This kid is graduating with his Associate’s degree from SUU at the same time he graduates from high school. I wish I could have done that.
Here is the front of his graduation card.

This is the inside of the card. They wanted it to be simple.

This series of images was just too fun not to share here. This is my 3 and a half year old son, Gavin. It is getting increasingly difficult to get him to pose for the camera. I managed to keep him in one (general) spot for a few shots. There are 5 sets of images in this series so don’t overlook the “next” button. Launch the mini gallery now.

I had a chance recently to do a senior portrait session. I am hoping to do more in the future and eventually have a gallery on my main site of senior portraits. As always with my photography, on location lighting is very important to me. I look at a lot of outdoor portraits that only use available light, with perhaps some bounce reflectors, and while they look nice, evenly lit, have a nice soft lighting touch, my style as a photographer is to use the available light and enhance it with my own lights. It is amazing what a bit of extra light can add to a photograph. It is all about balance. Balance between the “available” light and the light added by the photographer.

I wanted to go with a look that was a little different from a lot of senior portraits. The lighting is definitely more dramatic and interesting. I am pretty happy with the way it turned out and so what this young man. That is the important part.
