• Welcome to my blog!

I love photography! Pretty cliché I know. There is just so much to learn and explore. So many things to try. But the main reason I love photography is this "Photography is about savoring life at 1/100th of a second." - Marc Riboud

I am a portrait and wedding photographer based in Cedar City Utah. I also love landscape photography, but every great landscape I encounter, I can't help but think how much better the shot would be if I stuck a person in it.

Bella – High School Senior Photography

Bella is my oldest niece. Holy crap, she is a senior in high school! I’m not so sure her parents are ready for her to be so grown up. She lives in Seattle, but they visit Utah every summer when we have our annual family get-together. Once a year is usually all we get to see them. This year, however, we have been lucky enough to see them twice. It was only a few weeks ago that my wife and I took our boys to Seattle for our summer vacation.

While they were in Utah, Bella asked me if I would take her senior pictures. This girl is going places. She is smart, funny, and talented. As an uncle, it is fun to watch my nephews and nieces transition into adulthood. One minute they are kids and the next they are scouting Universities and applying to serve missions. That transition is an amazing time in life. I know that I thoroughly enjoyed that time in my life and life just gets better and better from there.

Gorgeous girl! Gorgeous pictures! Good luck picking one Bella.

Love them all! Gorgeous! You didn’t put the one of her in the middle of the haystack. I know it won’t work for a senior picture, but it should be framed and in my house!

How are you ever going to choose?? I love them all. Parker you are amazing!

Rachel – Cedar City Newborn Photography

This was probably one my favorite newborn photoshoots yet. Rachel’s mom did an excellent job preparing for our shoot. I went to their house for the photoshoot. Brought along all my stuff. Rachel’s mom had some space heaters ready to keep our working area nice and toasty. She kept Rachel awake before I got there. She fed her right before I arrived. That meant Rachel was nice and sleepy. Newborn photoshoots are probably one of the most challenging. You don’t have much choice but to live by their schedule. Also the temperature the babies need to keep them warm (without clothes) and to prevent their skin from turning mottled is uncomfortably warm for the rest of us. But, it is all worth it.

Seattle Vacation

I’ve been neglecting my blog lately. This summer has been busy and is practically over. Sad. I’ve had some good times though. We just recently got back from a nice week-long vacation to Seattle and the San Juan Islands. Beautiful up there. I hated to leave. We rode 5 ferries total and that was the highlight for my boys. They loved it.

Here are a few photos from our trip. One of our side trips was to Poulsbo. We love to go there just for Sluys’ Bakery. They make the best wedding cookies ever.

Oh my word!!! Those have got to be entered in something somewhere. That baby is the most adorable thing I have ever seen. The one with the doll is priceless. I hope they realize how great you are to document life for them.

This little gal had the coolest hair ever. Fourteen days old this one. Newborns are fun, yet challenging to photograph. The first two weeks of life goes by so fast and they change so much by the time they are 2 weeks old. You can’t get those fleeting precious weeks back. Good thing we have cameras.

Alysen & Jonny – Cedar City Wedding Photography

Just some of the highlights from Alysen and Jonny’s wedding. It was originally scheduled to be up Cedar Canyon, but due to the massive snowfall we got this winter, it had to be moved to a lower elevation. A place where the snow was melted. So, the wedding was in Jonny’s aunt’s back yard. Turned out to be a fantastic location, old barn and everything.

The wedding was great, the BBQ was amazing, the people were awesome. Alysen and Jonny both looked amazing.

The picture of the old lady taking a picture is CLASSIC! Love it! Great shots all-together thought.

Isaac & Marissa – Cedar City Engagement Photography

I could tell from their photo shoot that Isaac and Marissa are perfect for each other. They will have a wonderful life together, I’m quite certain of it.

This was the first photo shoot that I had an assistant/second shooter with me. I was accompanied by Mandi. To be honest I worked Mandi pretty hard with lighting gear and she didn’t get much of a chance to shoot, but she said she had fun anyway. She managed to get a few behind the scenes shots that are up on her blog. The 12th image in this post is the exact moment that she took of me as I was standing on a garbage can to get the shot. Hey, you gotta use what’s available sometimes.

The lighting on the last two shots was kind of fun. It was done with two strobes triggered with PocketWizard IIs. We worked around this sculpture for a while. Arrived after the sun set. Isaac and Marissa wanted to get some photos taken there. It is a sculpture just west of the Centrum building at SUU. One strobe is behind the couple, slightly to camera right. The other strobe is being held by Mandi just to the right of Isaac’s head and bounced off the metal sculpture to light their faces.

I love this photo! How did you do it? It is so artistic! You always amaze me.

Poster shoot highlights

Here are the highlights from our little poster shoot.

I forgot to mention, my wife made the costume that Heather is wearing. The costume was for a dance called “Boing,” choreographed by my wife as well. The costumes, well, they were designed to “boing.” That hoop in the dress totally bounces around and looks really stinkin’ cool.

Another note, be prepared for a barrage of blog posts related to this concert. There will likely be a few more:)

Love the clouds in the back.

Maddie – Cedar City Teen Photography

So this is about as remote as you can get for a location shoot. For Maddie and her family, it was an 8 hour drive. Two of those hours were on a never-ending dirt road named Hole in the Rock Road. Maddie is my niece. Kids grow up so dang fast. We were on our annual spring family camping trip. This year we went out on the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. I promised Maddie a photo shoot several months ago. Our paths only cross occasionally and most of the time there is no time for photos. This time, we made time.

The location is specifically Dance Hall Rock. We were camped a coupled miles south of it. By the time we got to Dance Hall Rock, the sun had set, so we were working in twilight. It was fun.

Also of note on this shoot, my 50mm lens took a huge tumble and survived. It rolled out of my bag, down the sandstone about 10 feet and landed in a big crack in the rock. I thought for sure it was toast, but there isn’t even a scratch on it.

Wow. These are gorgeous! I love the settings and the bare feet! LOVE THEM!!!!

Meet the Abster. So dang cute. She was so sleepy, yet she would not go to sleep for us. Little baby yawns are so stinkin’ cute. Two hours later, she was still awake and yawning. Mom and dad reported that she slept really well that night.

The one shot where her eyes are closed was actually a blink, not really sleeping:)
