John is a good friend of mine and I was excited when he asked me if I would do family portraits for him. He had to ask in the middle of January when it was freezing cold. It was fun. We got to the location and we actually had to have them jump in the back of my truck to drive the last 100 or so yards to the final location on a very muddy dirt road.
John has two boys that are pretty much the same age as my two boys. I brought my boys along on this shoot. Maybe not the best idea in retrospect. Jason and Gavin kept running off with each other to play. Hey, they had fun. We got some pictures, it all turned out good. Gavin (my 4 yr old) even provided some really good smiles (see shot #3 in this post) when he decided he really needed to pee and picked the closest bush he could find. Ah little boys. I just roll with it.
So here are just a few of my favorites.

I get lots of requests for extended family photoshoots over the holidays. For some families, it is the only time of the year everyone is together. I can relate to that, although our one time of the year is usually in the summer at our annual family summer party/gathering/vacation. The Olsen family wanted their photos taken over Thanksgiving. In fact, we arranged to take the photos on Thanksgiving day. So once again, this post is a testament to how far behind I get with the blog. Rest assured that my clients get their photos within a week. I just don’t get around to posting them here until later.

What can I say, the Rees family was great. This is the way all family photoshoots should go, especially big families. They were very relaxed and laid back. They wanted me to spend the first hour just taking candid shots of them doing their thing. The family had rented a cabin at Brian Head over Thanksgiving. It was an extended family photoshoot the way it should be done. Only one big group shot was taken.

The Rees family was different. They were very fun. They had no expectations of having everyone looking in the same direction. They also welcomed the fact that some kids would cry and get upset. They thought it was cute. They are right. As much as we would like to control how kids behave and how a photoshoot should go, kids are kids and I welcome that.

A beautiful family in a beautiful setting.

Josh and I talked several times about doing some photos. First it was winter and he wanted to wait until spring when it was greener outside. Spring came and went. Summer came and went. Them Mary emailed me in the fall and we finally got it scheduled. They picked a great time. Better than spring I think, my favorite time of year in fact. Many of the leaves on the mountain had all fallen off, but we found a patch of really great color to work with. Turned out awesome.

Had lots of fun shooting the Shakespear family. I always enjoy photographing kids. It was especially fun chasing little Zoe around.
